Less than 1 minute

The city authorities of Kumasi have pressed a strong warning button, expressing preparedness to wade “war” against commercial drivers charging unapproved transportation fares.

Management of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has noted with grieve concerns this unfortune phenomenon among drivers in the city, describing it as “illegal and highly unacceptable”.

In a press release issued by the Management of KMA via its Public Relations Unit on Monday, August 17, 2026, the Assembly said its attention had been drawn to reports of drivers and station executives charging fares above the approved rates recently.

According to KMA, transport unions, particularly station executives and drivers, are hereby cautioned to desist from charging unapproved fares with immediate effect.

To practicalise their warning statement, a KMA enforcement taskforce is billed to storm various transport unions and stations to ensure that they operate in conformity with the law.

Early this year, similar moves were successfully taken by KMA to address this challenge but it has resurfaced after a couple of months.

The Assembly warns that transport operating permits issued by KMA shall be revoked immediately if any union or individual is found culpable.

It therefore urges transport executives at both regional and branch levels to ensure compliance among station officers and drivers, whom the Assembly described as “the worst culprits in charging unapproved transport fares.”
