The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has told a packed audience at Howard University in the USA that traditional leadership is not a relic of the past but a living resource for modern governance.

He made the statement at a historic Royal Lecture at the University’s Cramton Auditorium in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

The lecture was organized by the Millennium Excellence Foundation under the theme “The Return of the Throne to its Descendants., ”

Otumfuo said the Asante political system is often misunderstood because people focus only on its visible symbols like the Golden Stool, Royal Umbrellas, and drums, rather than the philosophy behind them.

He explained that beneath the splendour lies a sophisticated philosophy built on accountability, trusteeship, and service to the people.

The Asante King stressed that traditional leadership should not be seen as an institution inherited from the past, nor should culture be reduced to a mere ceremonial display.

He said culture and chieftaincy are not outdated customs, but practical tools that can still promote accountable leadership, national unity, peace, and reconnect Africa with its diaspora.

He added that while law is indispensable, law alone can not create a good society.

Otumfuo clarified that he is not the owner of the Golden Stool, but its custodian who holds the people’s heritage in trust.

Howard University officials described the visit as historic, reflecting the university’s deep connections to Africa and its role as the intellectual capital of Black America.

The Royal Lecture was graced by Ghana’s Ambassador to the US, H. E. Victor Smith; Howard University’s Interim President, Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick; Provost ,Dr. Anthony Wutoh; Associate Professor of African Studies, Dr. Greg Carr and other faculty members.

Also present were students, members of the African diplomatic corps, the Ghanaian diaspora community, and officials of the Millennium Excellence Foundation.
