Strategic Vision:

As part of MTN’s milestone 30th Anniversary Celebrations, the DigiFest competition seeks to bridge the gap between creative ideation and commercial sustainability.

While global gaming continues to evolve into a multi-billion-dollar industry, African narrative presence within mainstream digital entertainment remains historically underrepresented.

MTN’s initiative seeks to disrupt this trend by equipping young visionaries with the tools, exposure, and commercial pathways necessary to monetize their craft.

The inaugural event, hosted at the prestigious College of Engineering, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, builds upon an established academic partnership that previously birthed a successful artificial intelligence hackathon.

Out of an overwhelming response of over 50 submissions from across the nation, an elite cohort of 10 standout projects was selected for rigorous evaluation.

“This competition forms an integral part of our broader strategy to build robust, indigenous technical capacity while systematically reducing Ghana’s reliance on foreign digital media. Our developers possess the authentic lived experiences, creative ingenuity, and storytelling prowess needed to project Ghanaian heritage onto the international, Mr Boadu, Manager for Video and Gaming at MTN Ghana stated.

He emphasized that DigiFest is envisioned as a recurring annual phenomenon.

Future iterations are slated to rotate across regional hubs to democratize access, stimulate youth engagement, and inspire grassroots innovation nationwide.

Importantly, organizers clarified that the competition strictly focuses on interactive digital game development, distinguishing it entirely from sports betting or gambling.

Highlighting the economic and cultural significance of the sector, Ms. Venus Tawia, Director of Women’s Esports at the Esports Association of Ghana and leader of Queens Africa, emphasized the need for strategic investment in local content creation.

“Gaming is a unique confluence of interdisciplinary skills-blending complex software engineering, sound architecture, graphic design, and interactive narrative art. MTN’s initiative offers a vital launching pad for developers to iterate, publish, and thrive within the dynamic digital economy”, Ms.Tawia stated.

Ms. Tawia praised the shortlisted teams for weaving authentic Ghanaian elements into their game mechanics, including native languages, folklore, and relatable everyday experiences.

The developer community has warmly received the initiative, noting that structured platforms of this scale have historically been rare within the sub-region.

Clement Asare, an IT student at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), expressed gratitude for the national platform and exposure.

Mantey Calib, creator of the community-tier project Akofena, commended MTN for placing indigenous developers at the center of Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.

Having opened calls on August 24, 2026, and concluded submissions on October 19, 2026, the contest now enters its final pitch stage, where finalists will defend their interactive prototypes before an expert judging panel at KNUST.

As MTN Ghana celebrates three decades of connectivity, DigiFest 2026 stands out as a visionary investment in Ghana’s creative digital future.
