With immediate effect, no person is allowed to fall a tree within the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) area without prior approval from the authorities.

Anyone who goes contrary to this directive will be severely punished.

This is contained in a statement issued by its Public Relations Unit on Monday, August 10, 2026.

It states, “…no person, institution, developer, or organization shall cut down, remove, prune, or destroy any tree within the Metropolis without notifying and obtaining approval from the Physical Planning Department of KMA”

According to the authorities, this directive aims to preserve and restore the city’s reputation as the “Garden City of West Africa.”

Kumasi City authorities noted that trees are an essential part of the city’s environment and contribute to its beauty, biodiversity, climate resilience, and air quality.

They further directed that where the removal of a tree is considered prudent for approved development or for public safety, the owner or developer must formally notify the Physical Planning Department for inspection and authorization.

The Assembly, therefore, enjoins the public to support its efforts to protect and enhance the city’s environment.
