Local representatives within the Adamus Resources Limited area are requesting that the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, look into the ongoing disagreement between the mining firm and host communities.
The request, led by Hon. Yacoub Abdul Aziz of the Salma Electoral Area, follows recent demonstrations that have created a sense of unease in the region.
Security Concerns
The need for a resolution was highlighted by a recent gathering on Adamus concessions where residents expressed their dissatisfaction by burning tires, blocking access roads, and damaging security posts.
Hon. Aziz noted that these actions reflect a growing sense of frustration among the local population.
“The security situation in Nzema East and surrounding areas is a matter of concern,” Hon. Aziz stated.
“If these issues are not addressed soon, there is a possibility of further disagreements and continued instability.”
Points of Contention
The friction is primarily driven by two concerns held by the local community:
Operational Concerns:
Residents suggest the company may have leased portions of its concession to foreign nationals for alluvial mining, which they believe may not align with standard mining regulations.
Access to Livelihoods:
Local workers feel overlooked. They claim that while their requests to access certain areas for work have been declined, foreign operators have reportedly been granted entry.
Request for Ministerial Involvement:
While acknowledging the Minister’s current work, the assembly members are encouraging further intervention to help settle these matters permanently.
They are seeking a balanced solution focused on:
Increased Dialogue:
Direct communication between the Ministry, traditional leaders, and Adamus Resources.
Greater Transparency:
Addressing the lack of clarity regarding the leasing of concessions.
Community Participation:
Finding a compromise between the company’s operations and the residents’ economic needs.
The assembly members believe that the Minister’s involvement will help rebuild trust and maintain the social balance of the district.
Context of the Dispute
Residents of the Nzema East community have expressed concerns regarding the operations of Adamus Resources Limited for approximately three months.
Local groups claim the company is operating on disputed land and have raised questions regarding the legality of certain activities.
There have been several interactions between the residents and the firm that have resulted in physical altercations. Most recently, community members held a protest to voice their disapproval of the company’s current practices.
