Ashanti GJA To Host Sensitization Forum on Personal Safety

Less than 1 minute Minutes

To mark World Environment Day 2026, the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is partnering with Reporters Without Borders (RSF Germany) to host a specialized training program focused on safer environmental reporting.

Scheduled for Friday under the global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” the initiative aims to equip selected journalists with the tools to cover complex environmental issues while protecting themselves in high-risk reporting environments.

The training comes at a critical time for Ghana, where illegal small-scale mining (popularly known as “galamsey”) and broader extractive industry challenges dominate the national conversation.

While mining remains a key economic driver, it brings heavy environmental and social challenges that require responsible, accurate media coverage.

In recent years, media practitioners investigating environmental degradation have faced rising dangers, including physical attacks, intimidation, and accidents in remote areas.

“To perform this role effectively, journalists must be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and safety awareness needed to report with accuracy, courage, and responsibility,” said Ashanti GJA Chairman Kofi Adu Domfeh ahead of the event.

He emphasized that quality journalism is crucial for holding bad actors accountable and giving a voice to affected communities.

The workshop will feature a robust panel of experts, including:

Dr. Jackson Adiyah Nyantakyi (Ashanti Regional Director, EPA)

Erastus Asare Donkor (Renowned Environmental Journalist)

Dr. Jones Opoku-Ware (Criminologist, KNUST)

Kofi Adu Domfeh (Ashanti GJA Chairman)

Details:

Participants will undergo training in risk assessment, conflict-sensitive reporting, and specific personal safety measures for volatile areas.

The ultimate goal of the workshop is to foster stronger collaboration between the media, regulatory bodies, and mining stakeholders.
