Foreign Diplomats including Ambassadors representing their countries in Ghana have praised the Vice President, Dr Mahamodu Bawumia for showing commitment to the peace of Ghana.

Speaking on behalf of the dipolomats during a courtesy call on the Vice President, Mr Maher Kheir, Lebanon Ambassador to Ghana and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, congratulated the Vice-President, Dr Mahamodu Bawumia for acting gracefully by conceding defeat in the December 7 general elections.

The diplomats noted that the singular act by Dr Bawumia showed his humanity and personal values about the institution of state.

Delivering a statement during a meeting with Vice President, the diplomats through their Dean said that the conduct of Dr Bawumia and the general attitude of the Ghanaian public  showcased the country in good light among the comity of nations.

The group therefore urged Dr Bawumia to look into the future with hope and keep doing his best for the country.

Response:

In response, the Veep said he chose to give an early concession speech for a number of reasons.

The NPP,  the Veep disclosed through its internal collation mechanism, knew at dawn that the election had been lost.

Therefore waiting for the EC to go through days of putting together their documents would lead to days of unnecessary tension, Dr Bawumia intimated.

The Vice President stated such tension would have occasioned a potential disturbing as well as violent atmospheres.

Rather, he said, he chose to concede early and preserve Ghana’s peace.

Economic and International Impact:

He mentioned he was also concerned about the economic impact of any disturbances or violence, especially as the country was gradually recovering from the various challenges.

Lastly, the Veep posited that he was concerned about the security implications for the subregion of any violence or conflict in Ghana, adding that terrorists would have taken advantage and spread anarchy in the country and in the sub-region.
