MTN Ghana has officially completed the legal separation of its Mobile Money (MoMo) financial service into an independent entity, now operating as Mobile Money Fintech Ltd. (MMFL).
Management reassures customers that the corporate restructuring, which took official effect on March 31, 2026, will cause zero service disruptions while paving the way for superior digital financial products.
Regulatory Compliance:
The move fulfills the requirements of the Bank of Ghana’s Payment Systems and Services Act, 2019 (Act 987).
Zero Operational Change for Users: Wallet balances, transaction codes, PINs, and agent operations remain completely unchanged.
Enhanced Innovation:
As a dedicated fintech firm, MMFL will focus on expanding its agent network, accelerating product rollout, and deepening financial inclusion.
Regulatory Alignment:
Speaking at a press engagement in Kumasi, Nana Addai, Head of Mobile Money Fintech Ltd. for the Northern Business District, clarified that the separation aligns directly with regulatory directives set by the Bank of Ghana.
Under the Payment Systems and Services Act, 2019 (Act 987), telecommunications operators in Ghana are required to decouple their electronic money and fintech operations from standard cellular network services.
This regulatory firewall protects consumer funds and ensures strict oversight of financial services.
“We remain firmly committed to delivering secure, customer-centric digital financial services while accelerating financial inclusion across Ghana,” Nana Addai stated.
He added that, “Operating independently gives us the flexibility to innovate faster, scale up our agent network, and design targeted financial offerings for individuals, SMEs, and corporate clients.”
Service Delivery:
Addressing potential consumer anxieties around the transition, MMFL confirmed that everyday transactions will remain seamless.
Customers do not need to re-register or modify their accounts.
Account Security:
All existing MoMo wallet balances, transactional histories, and security settings are fully intact.
Agent Operations:
Cash-in and cash-out points will operate normally without changes to commission structures or service protocols.
CEO:
Supporting the transition, MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett noted in a statement that operating as separate legal entities positions both telecom and fintech units to scale independently while continuing to support Ghana’s digital economy.
Mobile Money Fintech Ltd. is jointly owned by MTN Dutch Holdings and the MTN Ghana Fintech Trust.
