This strategic pivot was unveiled by Sylvia Otuo Acheampong, Chief Products and Services Officer, during MTN Ghana’s Media and Stakeholder Forum in Accra.

While the platform has successfully scaled its user base, Acheampong emphasized that the next phase of growth is about engagement.

“We have achieved significant scale, but now the focus is on driving usage, ensuring customers actively engage with services beyond basic transactions,” she noted.

To achieve this, the company is focusing on three core pillars:

Diverse Financial Products:

Expanding the availability of credit, insurance, and advanced payment solutions.

Merchant Onboarding:

Increasing the number of vendors and service providers who accept digital payments to keep funds within the ecosystem.

Reducing Cash-Reliance:

Moving away from “cash-out” habits by making digital payments more practical and attractive for everyday spending.

Security and Trust:

As the ecosystem grows, so do the risks. Acheampong addressed the persistent threat of fraud, noting that the company is adopting a dual-layered defense strategy:

AI-Driven Detection:

Deploying sophisticated artificial intelligence tools to identify and intercept fraudulent patterns in real-time.

Public Education:

Recognizing that “social engineering” remains the primary threat, the company is doubling down on literacy campaigns like the “Shine Your Eye” initiative to empower users against scams.

Collaborative Future:

The forum served as a vital touchpoint for regulators, civil society organizations, and banking partners.

It underscores MTN Ghana’s broader commitment to transparent dialogue as it builds a robust, end-to-end digital economy.
