THE FIVE-month old bay boy, Akwasi Banahene, who was declared missing at the Asafo Market in Kumasi on Saturday, has been found in the company of a woman in her late 30’s at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, whose details have not been disclosed by the police yet, was reportedly apprehended by the Ejisu Police whilst trying to escape with the innocent child on Monday evening, this news portal has been informed.
The missing baby boy, who was looking healthy and strong at the time he was rescued, is said to have since reunited with her distraught mother, identified as Freda, a food vendor at the Cape Coast Bus Terminal section in the Asafo market.
A police source who disclosed this information to Press1News suspected that perhaps the suspected had wanted to take baby far away and hide him, saying that the suspect is now in custody and assisting with police investigations.
“Acting on intelligence, the Ejisu Police mounted a search and intercepted a woman who visibly matched the description of the suspected baby thief, who was carrying a baby boy, believed to be about five months old.
“The woman was instantly arrested at a police checkpoint and questioned but she continuously gave inconsistent answers so it became clear to the police that she had stolen the baby boy”, the source who demanded anonymity, said.
According to the source, the baby’s family was subsequently contacted in Kumasi and they rushed to the station and identified the baby as Akwasi Banahene, the five months only boy who was stolen from the Asafo Market in Kumasi.
The mother of the baby, a food vendor, had placed her sleeping son in front of her store in the Asafo Market, while she was preparing her food at the Cape Coast Bus Terminal section in the market in the early hours of Saturday.
While the woman was busily preparing the food, a woman she doesn’t know in the market, came to sit close to her store but she didn’t suspect any evil motive. But she later realized the woman and her son were nowhere to be found.
The missing baby case was immediately reported to the police at Asokwa, in the Ashanti Regional capital, who also alerted other police stations in the region to be on the watch out to help apprehend the suspect and rescue the baby.
Fortunately, the Ejisu Police managed to apprehend the suspect and rescued the baby to reunite with his parents.
The motive behind the woman’s weird decision to steal the innocent baby from her mother is not know yet.
From all indications, the suspect had planned to take the baby far away from the Ashanti Region in order to make it extremely difficult or impossible for the security agencies to arrest her and rescue the baby, but her plans failed.
