The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, did the uncommon when he defied Wednesday afternoon’s showers to visit some transport stations to caution commercial drivers to desist from charging unapproved fares.
He voluntarily loaded some vehicles to ensure compliance with the approved fares and proper destinations.
He also cautioned them against running ‘short-short’ services, which put passengers at a disadvantage.
Areas visited included Abrepo Junction, Racecourse, Ashtown, Kejetia, and Adum.
Hon. Boadi, who was joined by the KMA Transport Department and a security task force, stopped loaded vehicles and inquired from passengers whether they had been charged the approved fares before allowing the drivers to move on.
For those attempting to run ‘short-short’ services, the Mayor and his team took over from the drivers and loaded the vehicles to their approved destinations in compliance with the transport charter of their unions.
He ordered the immediate closure of transport unions operating without permits, directing them to secure the necessary documentation before operating.
At Abrepo Junction, the Mayor and his team advised traders selling along the road to vacate before Thursday, October 8, 2026, to allow for the smooth commencement of the next phase of the Suame Interchange project.
He also called on the public to report drivers and unions who flaunt the order to charge approved fares.
