Samira Bawumia, wife of the former Vice-President, has expressed her profound difficulty in comprehending the frequent and often baseless accusations leveled against her husband, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Addressing a gathering of New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates and key party figures in the Asokwa Constituency on Tuesday evening, Mrs. Bawumia confessed that the nature of these attacks sometimes makes her “pity” her husband for the demanding path he has chosen in public service and politics.
Man of Unwavering Commitment:
Having been intimately acquainted with her husband for nearly 24 years, Mrs. Bawumia vouched for Dr. Bawumia’s character, stating that he pours his “heart and soul” into every endeavor.
She highlighted the perplexing nature of some of the internal political rhetoric.
“It is difficult to understand that a man who has served for almost 24 years at the Bank of Ghana—first as a research assistant and later as a Deputy Governor, all during NPP tenures—a man whose loyalty to the NPP is unquestioned, would all of a sudden be described as an NDC man, simply because of internal politics,” a tearful Mrs. Bawumia shared with the audience.
Her voice carried the weight of frustration over what she perceives as a deliberate misrepresentation of the husband’s lifelong commitment to the party.
Politics of Lies and Insincerity:
Mrs. Samira Bawumia passionately decried the prevailing political culture characterized by deceit, unfounded allegations, and insinuations.
She acknowledged that competition is a natural and healthy part of the democratic process, particularly for individuals aspiring to lead the NPP.
However, she stressed that such pursuit must be conducted with absolute sincerity and integrity.
She expressed bewilderment over the tactics employed by some competitors seeking the NPP flag-bearer position.
She questioned why lies, insults, and veiled suggestions are being used to argue that Dr. Bawumia should be sidelined merely because he failed to secure an election victory when he was previously given the chance to lead.
This approach, she implied, undermines the very spirit of internal democracy.
History Favors a Second Chance:
In a powerful defense of his current campaign, Mrs. Bawumia provided a historical perspective on leadership bids within Ghanaian politics.
“In Ghana’s political history, it is clear that those who contest for the second time often receive the mandate to lead. Therefore, Dr. Bawumia is not inventing anything new or unprecedented when he aspires to lead the NPP again,” Mrs. Samira asserted.
She positioned her husband’s renewed attempt not as a failure to recognize a past defeat, but as a continuation of a proven trajectory often seen in successful political campaigns.
Promise of Empowerment and Welfare:
Looking ahead, Mrs. Samira Bawumia made a compelling promise to the delegates.
She promised to dedicate herself to pushing for the empowerment and welfare of all party members should Dr. Bawumia be elected as the party leader and, subsequently, as the future President of Ghana in 2028.
She noted that having campaigned extensively alongside her husband across the entire nation, she has gained an intimate understanding of the myriad challenges facing the Ghanaian populace, including committed NPP members.
This firsthand knowledge, she argued, makes her an ideal advocate to champion their development and general well-being.
“Asokwa delegates, I appeal to you earnestly to vote for Dr. Bawumia. I assure you that I will not just be a First Lady; my primary preoccupation would be to drive your empowerment so that you can improve your livelihoods, and by extension, the lives of the Ghanaian people,” Mrs. Samira appealed.
“Together, we will succeed as a country under a Bawumia presidency”, Mrs Samira stated in closing.
