AS PART of plans to encourage basic, senior high, and tertiary schools to practice school gardens, the Ministry of Agriculture has instituted an awards scheme for the best schools in this year’s Farmers Day celebration.
The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Eric Opoku, announced this new farmers’ award scheme during a visit to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace last Friday, saying the Ministry intends to ensure food security by involving schools.
He stated that the Ministry is not leaving out schools in the Feed Ghana policy; hence, the award scheme aims to whip up students’ interest in contributing to the policy’s success.
He announced that there will be a bounty award for the best school in basic, senior high, and tertiary levels at national, regional, and district levels in the next Farmers Day celebration in December 2025.
He urged school authorities to contact agricultural officers in various districts across the country to ensure their involvement in the Feed Ghana policy, ensuring food security and rewards.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II lauded the idea, noting that it’s reminiscent of the “Operation Feed Yourself” initiative introduced by General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, Ghana’s former military ruler.
Furthermore, he urged the Minister to work hard to ensure that Ghana becomes the food basket for the sub-region and Africa as a whole.
