School Officials in Kumasi in Trouble Over Unlawful Fees

Less than 1 minute Minutes

Even before a disciplinary committee would prescribe appropriate punitive action against the headteacher of Buokrom Estate M/A Basic School and cohorts for charging unapproved fees in the school, they will be transferred.

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has directed the Metro Directorate of Education to transfer as early as possible the headteacher and staff who committed the unlawful act.

Speaking on Kumasi-based Akoma FM Morning Show on Monday, August 4, 2025, the Mayor said it is only prudent that the perpetrators are transferred from the school before the community vents its spleen on them.

This decision became possible after a viral video on TikTok, originated from an account handle ‘@governor1tv’, sought to draw the attention of the city authorities and the President intervene in the mandatory collection of items and amounts levied upon pupils of the Buokrom Estate M/A Basic School by their head teacher and teachers.

In the video, one Prince Ali Issah narrated that any student who failed to pay these amounts was sacked from school and denied certain services in the school.

He questioned the legality of the acts by the school authorities and therefore requested city authorities to call them to order.

In a swift reaction to the complaint, the office of the Mayor and the Metro Education Directorate have affirmed that the content of the video is true after preliminary investigations.

In view of the evidence available, city authorities have constituted a disciplinary committee consistent with the Ghana Education Service (GES) code of conduct for its staff.

The Disciplinary Committee has an Education Director’s representative as Chairperson, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) representative, Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) representative, Director for Social Welfare, Metro Education Oversight Committee (MEOC) representative, Metro P.T.A. representative, and Secretary.

The seven-member committee is scheduled to sit on August 15, 2025.

In a related development, the Public Relations Unit of KMA, on Monday, August 4, issued a press release to reaffirm their Mayor’s statement on Akoma FM.

According to the press release, the decision to transfer perpetrators intends to preserve the integrity of the investigation and restore the school’s environment to normalcy.

It, therefore, assured the public and parents that the outcome of the Disciplinary Committee would be made known.
