Less than 1 minute Minutes

SOMETHING INTERESTING occurred during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential election on Saturday as there were more rejected ballots than the votes secured by Kwabena Agyapong, one of the five candidates.

Records in the party’s final 2026 presidential election declaration form indicated that a total of 561 rejected ballots were recorded from a total votes cast of 196,462 across the 16 regions in the country.

Kwabena Agyapong, a former General Secretary of the NPP, who campaigned across the 16 regions and appealed to the delegates to cast their ballots for him, got just 402 votes, which is fewer than the 561 rejected ballots.

The issue raises serious concern about how voter education still continue to be one of the major problems confronting the country’s democratic practice and electoral process, especially when it comes to voting to elect a leader.

Scary Development For NPP

Interestingly, the delegates that exercised their franchise during Saturday’s NPP presidential election, ideally, are expected to be enlightened about voting as they are the mouthpieces of the party in their various electoral areas.

If the delegates, who are supposed to educate other people in their communities about the proper ways to vote, cannot vote properly, then the country and the NPP, in particular, still has a long way to go, especially when it comes to voting during elections.

Party Gurus Angry

Some of the NPP bigwigs that spoke to Press1News condition of anonymity about the rejected ballots problem, said the party’s leadership should as a matter of urgency start an education drive to educate NPP members about how to vote.

According to them, if the party sleep over this major problem and don’t react, it could go a long way to hurt the party’s electoral fortunes during the 2028 presidential and parliamentary election, which is fast approaching.

No Rejected Ballot At NPP Headquarters

In a related development, there was not a single rejected ballot at the NPP headquarters in Accra during Saturday’s presidential election

Per the document declaring the final outcome of the polls, a total of 481 people voted at the NPP headquarters and they all voted properly, a sign that they are more enlightened about the proper ways of voting.
