In a strategic move to bolster the backbone of Ghana’s economy, telecommunications leader MTN Ghana has officially rolled out the third edition of its flagship SME Accelerated programme.
The initiative is specifically engineered to provide Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) with the high-level resources, financial literacy, and digital tools necessary to transition from local startups into competitive regional players.
Strategic Outreach and National Impact:
The 2026 edition commenced with a high-impact launch event in March, featuring the SME Business Clinic, a hands-on workshop where entrepreneurs receive direct consultation from industry experts.
While a successful session has already concluded in Ho, MTN is scaling its reach with upcoming clinics scheduled for Tamale and Koforidua.
These clinics serve as more than just networking hubs; they are designed to address the specific “pain points” of Ghanaian businesses, such as digital integration, supply chain management, and regulatory compliance.
Data-Driven Approach to Growth:
According to Abubakar Sidiq Mohammed, Senior Manager for SME Sales at MTN Ghana, the programme is built on a foundation of accountability and measurable outcomes.
“Our strategic partners do not simply offer one-off sessions; they actively monitor and measure the tangible impact of the programme on each participant,” Mohammed explained.
By providing bespoke guidance and a suite of digital tools, MTN ensures that SMEs can optimize their daily operations, reduce overhead costs, and effectively scale their business models to meet modern market demands.
Testimonials:
The success of the SME Accelerated programme is best reflected in the growth of its previous participants, many of whom have transformed from sole proprietorships into significant local employers.
Ruth Osei (Textile and African Prints Dealer):
Expressing deep gratitude for MTN’s continued investment, Ms. Osei highlighted how the support catalyzed her business expansion.
Thanks to the capital and mentorship provided, she has successfully scaled her operations and now employs ten staff members, contributing directly to local job creation.
Anthony Ekuban (Local Detergent Manufacturer):
Mr. Ekuban lauded MTN for creating a vital bridge between small businesses and financial institutions.
He credited the specialized training and investment support for converting his once-modest production line into a vibrant, high-output enterprise.
Background:
In Ghana, SMEs account for approximately 92% of all registered businesses and contribute roughly 70% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Despite their importance, many face significant hurdles, including limited access to affordable credit and a lack of digital infrastructure.
The MTN SME Accelerated programme acts as a private-sector intervention to bridge this gap, ensuring that the next generation of Ghanaian entrepreneurs has the technical “know-how” and the financial backing to thrive in an increasingly digital global economy.
