President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding press freedom and ensuring the safety of media professionals.
Speaking at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards, held at the Manhyia Palace on Saturday, November 8, 2025, President Mahama emphasized that his administration will not tolerate any form of intimidation, interference, or attacks on journalists.
“Under my leadership, this government will neither sanction nor tolerate any form of intimidation, interference, or attacks on journalists,” President Mahama declared.
He stressed that journalists play a vital role in Ghana’s democracy, and their safety is paramount.
The President announced that his government has taken proactive steps to strengthen relations between journalists and security agencies.
He has instructed the Ministers responsible for Government Communications and National Security to establish a permanent forum for constructive dialogue, fostering mutual respect and preventing future incidents.
President Mahama also urged journalists to exercise their rights responsibly, balancing freedom with responsibility, and emphasizing the importance of integrity, accuracy, and fairness in journalism.
He assured that justice will be served according to the law, emphasizing that victims of attacks be compensated, and perpetrators will face consequences.
However, President Mahama advised journalists to discharge their functions professionally and ethically, noting that responsible journalism enhances good governance, accountability, and fairness in society.
He said responsible journalism holds position bearers in check and accountable to the public.
