Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, has admitted that although there are many daunting challenges in the city’s transport system, they require a pragmatic approach to address them.
In his attempt to make the transport industry vibrant and attractive, he stated that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in consultation with transport stakeholders, will seek sustainable solutions to the industry’s challenges, acknowledging that it will take time.
Enumerating the challenges in the transport sector, the Mayor mentioned loading at unauthorized locations, charging unauthorized fares, and unauthorized transport unions, among other infractions, that need to be addressed.
The Mayor made these remarks when he was visited at his office by the Ashanti Regional Executives of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) on Friday, May 9, 2025.
Ofori-Agyeman Boadi expressed his eagerness to streamline the road transport sector, making it robust enough to attract investors while serving the public good.
As part of plans to address the daunting challenges, he recommended forming a task force comprising key stakeholders to identify, plan, and implement measures in line with the Assembly’s bye-laws and road traffic regulations.
Sumaila Boakye, Regional Chairman of GPRTU, used the visit to congratulate the Mayor on his new office and appealed to him to enforce laws and regulations in the transport industry.
He expressed the Union’s commitment to collaborating with the Assembly to maintain sanity and improve the transport sector in the city, highlighting flashpoints and challenges confronting their work.
