Mr. Sarfo Duku Esq, Communications head of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, has sparked controversy by stating that the only motivation for the club to participate in the domestic league is for entertainment purposes.
He made the remarks on Kessben FM in Kumasi while justifying the club’s decision to sell their talisman, Albert Amoah, following their elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup.
The news of Albert Amoah’s transfer to Libyan side Al Ahly Benghazi was confirmed just after the match.
Kotoko were knocked out of the competition by Wydad AC of Morocco, losing 6-1 on aggregate after losing in Accra by a lone goal.
The Communications head stated that the only motivation for participating in the Ghana League is to entertain themselves and identify talented players to generate revenue for the club.
According to Mr. Duku, the club lacks the quality, and particularly financial wherewithal to compete in continental competitions, noting, “We cannot continue to rely on Otumfuo’s financial support at all times.”
“The ultimate goal for the club is to participate in continental competitions, but… we can’t match them,” he emphasized.
