Kotoko wins Toyota Cup
Kumasi Asante Kotoko SC has beaten Kaiser Chiefs 3-2 on penalties to win the Toyota Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, South Africa, on Saturday July 26, 2024.
The home team dominated play in regulation time but failed to find the back of the net against the determined Porcupines.
Club officials, players, and vociferous supporters of the South African giants demonstrated eagerness to beat their visitors from the blast of the whistle by the referee.
They were just unlucky, hitting the woodwork once and making a number of dangerous incursions, but Kotoko’s defense lived up to the task.
Kotoko’s talisman, Kwame Poku, picked up a knock in the early stage of the match and could not continue the game.
Poku’s absence rendered Kotoko’s attack less potent, forcing Coach Karim Zito to change his intention and plan for the game.
Goalkeeper Mohammed Camara deserves special mention for standing between the home team and glory after saving decisive penalties for Kotoko.
The South African club has failed to lift the trophy since its introduction in 2024.
