The Ghana SDG Smart Cities Programme aims to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs at the local level through data-driven planning, inclusive governance, and sustainable infrastructure development.

The Programme is being funded through the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), supported by the Norwegian government and the Government of Ghana via the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.

The programme focuses on improving public service delivery, addressing urban challenges, and enhancing climate resilience in selected Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana.

To ensure readiness to participate in the SDG Smart Cities Programme, a District Implementation Committee (DIC) was inaugurated on Monday, June 30, 2025, in Kumasi, with the signing of an agreement.

The 14-member DIC consists of representatives from traditional authorities, assembly members, staff of KMA, academia, civil society organizations, and others, who will play a critical role in ensuring the successful implementation of the programme.

In his inauguration remarks, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of KMA, appealed to members of the DIC to accept their responsibility with dedication and a sense of purpose.

He stressed the importance of transparency, collaboration, and innovation in achieving the programme’s objectives.

“Let their work reflect the values of transparency, collaboration, and innovation that the SDGs stand for,” he advised.

The Mayor believes that the KMA’s participation in the SDG Smart Cities Programme will enable it to embrace innovation, strengthen planning systems, and mobilize broad-based collaboration across government, traditional authorities, academia, and civil society.
