Authorities at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) are determined to end the operation of commercial vehicles that do not belong to accredited and licensed unions, and thus operate under the ‘Waawaa’ transport system in Kumasi.
By September 19, 2025, the KMA will also introduce an obligatory Destination Indicator sticker, which shall restrict all commercial vehicles operating to and from the metropolis to specified destinations.
The ‘Waawaa’ transport operators not only perpetuate acts in contravention of Sections 137 and 138 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) but also bring disdain and discomfort due to their wanton display of unprofessionalism in their line of duty.
They, as usual, charge unapproved transport fares at will and instigate trouble between themselves and the public they serve.
To ensure strict compliance with this new development in the transport industry, described by Kumasi City authorities as the ‘Transport Reorganisation Agenda’, a couple of months ago, a meeting was convened between them and all 24 licensed transport unions in Kumasi.
At the meeting, it was agreed that the unions should register prospective members at no fee so that there would be order and sanity in the transport industry.
Besides, the Transport Department and Public Relations Unit of KMA are sensitising commercial transport operators who are yet to join a licensed union to do the needful before the deadline.
A task force mandated to operationalise the new transport directives, as planned, will hit the ground in the fullness of time.
The KMA therefore implores stakeholders in the transport industry to comply fully with this development to ensure sanity and order in Kumasi.
