King of Eswatini Endorses Decentralization, Urges Local Leaders to Boost Economies

The King of Eswatini, His Majesty Mswati III, has appreciated the enormity of the task confronting assembly members, advising them to manage their resources effectively to serve the people.

He noted that assembly members have limited resources to work with; however, effective management would enable members of their electoral areas to benefit from their leadership.

He urged assembly members to perform their duties with dignity and integrity, ensuring that the needs of their electorate are better served.

The King of Eswatini, “Ngwenyama”, offered this advice in his goodwill message delivered at a special meeting of the 9th Assembly of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the Royal Dome Rattray Park in Kumasi.

The special meeting was part of the King’s scheduled activities during his visit to Ghana from June 24-28, 2025.

The King endorsed the concept of decentralization in local government, noting its importance to national development.

He highlighted the opportunity for local leaders to share useful information and ideas as one of the benefits and urged district assemblies to increase their efforts to create jobs, build infrastructure, and provide an enabling environment to boost local economies.

The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, emphasized the importance of local governance, mentioning its contribution to grassroots participation in governance.

He applauded assembly members for their role in shaping society and democracy, urging them to maintain their efforts to move the nation forward.

Expressing his delight at hosting the King of Eswatini, Mr. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, Mayor of Kumasi, extended heartfelt gratitude to the King for the historic visit, hoping that it would mark the beginning of strong ties between the city and Eswatini.

He noted that strong ties between Kumasi and Eswatini would promote trade, tourism, cultural exchange, education, infrastructure, and other economic activities.

Mr. Patrick Kwame Frimpong, Presiding Member of KMA, chaired the special meeting and briefed the King on the local government concept and its contributions to Ghana’s democracy.

The meeting, which had a heavy security presence, was attended by KMA’s heads of department, units and, regional and metropolitan security officials.
