THE IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, has asked policemen hunting for those who have killed two people in Asawase in Kumasi, not to target people on motorbikes alone.
According to him, the perpetrators could use tricycles or even cars to outwit the police and commit more violence in the Ashanti region, so the police should be on the lookout.
“You should not to target motorbikes alone as you hunt for the killers, because they can also use tricycles or even vehicles to operate”, he admonished police personnel.
The IGP was addressing policemen when he led a powerful delegation from the police headquarters in Accra to Asawase on Saturday to assess the security situation in the area.
Significantly, the police chieftain’s security advice comes following the Ashanti Regional Security Council’s (REGSEC) ban of the use of motorbikes after 7pm in the Ashanti region.
The IGP also entreated the security personnel, including police and soldiers, to be alert at all times, saying an “offense can occur in the day or night so be vigilant at all times”.
He said the runaway killings in Asawase shot and killed the Kusase Chief, Sarki Azengbe on Tuesday evening and killed another man on Friday afternoon “so they can strike at anytime”.
Earlier on, COP Vance Baba Gariba, Director-General, Operations, Ghana Police Service, speaking on behalf of the IGP to the media, said the perpetrators would be nabbed.
According to him, the IGP, the interior minister and even the president are not happy about the shootings and killings of innocent people in Asawase by some faceless people.
In this regard, he explained that the IGP’s visit to the Ashanti Region was to demonstrate to the people that the police are determined to stop the shootings and arrest the killers.
“We are here to also assure the community that the police and other security agencies are capable to bring the shootings to an end and ensure law and order”, he stated.
According to him, the police would adopt two strategic measures in Asawase, including “community engagement and also reinforced security to stop the shootings here”.
Sounding very confident, COP Gariba stated that the “police will embark on an all manhunt strategy to apprehend the perpetrators to face the full rigours of the law very soon.
“We have commenced a lot of engagements with the leadership in Muslim and Zongo communities in Accra, Tema and some environs to help de-escalate the situation”.
The IGP, he said, has also instructed the Ashanti Regional Commander to also engage some key people in the Muslim and Zongo areas in his region to help de-escalate the situation.
COP Gariba appealed passionately to the public, notably those who have vital information, to share it with the police so that the perpetrators of the heinous crime would be arrested.
