The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has proposed the establishment of a Special Court to expedite the trial of individuals involved in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Mr Dwumfour made the call at the 29th GJA Media Awards, emphasizing the need for swift administration of justice to protect Ghana’s lands and waterbodies from the destructive effects of galamsey.
The GJA President’s suggestion comes amid growing concerns about the escalating galamsey menace, which has led to environmental degradation, water pollution, and loss of lives.
The 29th GJA Media Awards being held at the plush Silver Jubilee Hall at Manhyia Palace is under theme: “Safeguarding Ghana’s Future:The Role of the Media in Promoting Peace, Security and the Fight Against Galamsey.”
The event is under the patronage of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, with President John Dramani Mahama as Special Guest.
Dwumfour stressed that a Special Court would ensure that perpetrators face justice, serving as a deterrent to others.
The fight against galamsey has been ongoing, with various stakeholders, including the government, civil society organizations, and the media, calling for more effective measures to curb the menace.
