German Government Honours Prof. Frimpong Boateng with prestigious award

The German President, Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, honoured a distinguished Ghanaian cardiothoracic surgeon Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng with the Federal Cross of Merit for his outstanding contribution to medical cooperation between Ghana and Germany.

The prestigious award was presented at the residence of the German Ambassador in Accra on November 3, 2025, as part of President Steinmeier’s three-day state visit to Ghana.

Professor Frimpong-Boateng was recognized for establishing lasting medical practice, education, and research partnerships between Ghana and Germany.

The native of Toase in
Ashanti Region trained as a cardiac surgeon at the Hannover Medical School in Germany, where he became one of the pioneers in heart transplantation.

Upon his return to Ghana in 1989, he established the National Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and founded the Ghana Heart Foundation.

The Federal Cross of Merit is one of Germany’s highest honors, awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the country or advanced Germany’s relations with other nations.

Professor Frimpong-Boateng expressed gratitude for the recognition but also highlighted the need for Ghana to value its own professionals .
