Less than 1 minute Minutes

After two rounds of elections held on Thursday February 19, 2026, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM) to chair the Assembly for the next two years.

The incumbent, Hon. Patrick Kwame Frimpong polled 35 and 36 votes in the first and second rounds of the election, against his lone contender, Hon. Ernest Baffour Ofori, who garnered 24 and 23 votes respectively in the two rounds.

According to Section 27 of the Local Governance Act (Act 936), the Presiding Member is elected by at least two-thirds of the Assembly members.

KMA has 66 Assembly members; therefore, a winner needs at least 44 votes.

Earlier, Hon. Isham Alhassan and Hon. Kwame Agyemang withdrew their candidacies for the vacant PM position.

Another meeting will be organised within the next 10 days for the election of the PM as prescribed by Act 936.
