AYA Statement On The Passing of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

LETTER OF CONDOLENCE

It is with deep sorrow that the Asante Youth Association (AYA) received the news of the passing of the Former First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.

The Former First Lady was an extraordinary woman whose remarkable contributions to Ghana’s development, particularly in the area of women empowerment and social justice, will forever be remembered. During her tenure as First Lady, she championed the cause of women through the establishment of the 31st December Women’s Movement, which inspired, mentored, and empowered countless Ghanaian women, many of whom now occupy key positions in our nation’s leadership.

Her advocacy and tireless efforts also led to the enactment of the Interstate Succession Law (PNDCL 111), a historic legal reform that has protected the rights of widows and children across Ghana.

Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings stood tall as a true Asante woman—confident, bold, and proud of her heritage. Her choice of traditional Asante attire, particularly Kente or Kaba & Slit, even on global platforms, was a statement of identity and cultural pride. She embodied resilience, boldness and purpose.

As a devoted wife, she stood firmly beside her husband, the late Former President Jerry John Rawlings, through his 21-years leadership, from military rule to democratic governance—demonstrating rare loyalty and fortitude.

For us at AYA, this loss is deeply personal. We had listed Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings as the first honoree for our upcoming Asante Legacy Awards in recognition of her lifelong impact and service. The last correspondence with her office was during our recent Symposium, which she had intended to attend but could not, due to personal matters, yet she graciously sent us her heartfelt message of support.

We have indeed lost a mother, a mentor, and an icon whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of Asante women and Ghanaians at large. Her life was one of purpose, service, and distinction.

We at AYA extend our deepest condolences to the Rawlings family. Damirifa Due! Damirifa Due! Damirifa Due ne amanehunu!
May her soul rest peacefully in the bosom of her Maker.

Yours in sympathy,
[Tweneboa Kodua ]
General Secretary
Asante Youth Association (AYA)
