Eight (8) Persons with various forms of disabilities (PWDs) have been given support in the shape of medical, educational and commerce to make their lives meaningful.
Speaking on behalf of the Asokwa Municipal Chief Executive during a brief ceremony to hand over four refrigerators as well as financial assistance to four other persons, Mr Samuel Owusu-Mensah, Coordinating Director for Asokwa said the Assembly was providing support whose total cash component was around GhC 26, 000.00.
This support, Mr Owusu-Mensah said is part of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) which stipulates three percent (3%) of same is reserved for he support of PWDs.
“The Asokwa Assembly is grateful to government for continuously releasing funds out of the DACF to support persons with disability and this morning we are happy to provide eight (8) persons with educational, medical and business support to make their lives meaningful”, Mr Owusu-Mensah stated.
Beneficiaries:
Kofi Manu, a 48 year old physically challenged person thanked the Asokwa Municipal Assembly for the support.
“I got injured around 1992 through an accident which affected my leg and mobility. I have since struggled but I decided to approach the Asokwa Municipal Assembly for support and i am glad to say the Social Development Department has provided me with a refrigerator to enable me to be in business so i can support my family”, Manu narrated.
Yaa Akoto, a young lady with speech and mobility issues said she was grateful to the Assembly for providing her refrigerator to commence fish business.
Speaking through the mother, Yaa Akoto said, “i have interest in selling fish and adding drinks and water to the busines. I therefore believe with this support from the Asokwa Assembly i will be able do it and make a living out of same”.
Social Development Department:
Speaking to the media, Dickson Frimpong, Asokwa Municipal Director of Social Development Department commended government for deliberately investing funds into the welfare of PWDs.
The support system, he noted has cushioned most of the PWDs to become responsible and enterprising.
He, however, encouraged beneficiaries to use funds and items allocated to them judiciously to serve them well.
“I am hopeful that these eight (8) persons would use the funds in terms of medical, educational and business to support themselves well in life”, the Director stated.
