Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has expressed concern over the unfavorable staff-to-student ratio at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), noting it’s a threat to academic quality.
He appealed to the government to grant immediate financial clearance to recruit more academic and administrative staff, emphasizing that the current ratio of 1,190 faculty members to 85,000 students is woefully inadequate.
The Asantehene, who is the Chancellor of KNUST, made the statement during the university’s 59th Congregation, held on Saturday, November 29.
The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, was the guest of honor, and was joined by the Interior Minister, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Members of Parliament, traditional leaders, and some prominent alumni of the school.
The Chancellor and custodian of Asante lands also warned individuals encroaching on university lands, stating that such actions would not be tolerated.
