Ghana spends approximately $2 billion annually on poultry imports, with 95% of products coming from outside the country, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Eric Opoku, expressed concern over this phenomenon during a familiarization tour at A2 Agro Allied, an emerging giant in poultry feed production owned by Ghanaian, in Kaase, a suburb of Kumasi, on Friday, June 13, 2025.
He lamented that the prevailing conditions in the poultry industry are worrying, adding that the time has come for the narrative to be corrected.
He hinted that the government would partner with the private sector to increase poultry production in Ghana and improve the economy.
The Minister for Agric believes that the introduction of the government’s flagship “Nkoko Nketekete” program, set to be launched in July 2025, would lead to significant improvements in the poultry industry.
He said the government would support small, medium, and large-scale poultry production through the “Nkoko Nketekete” program, noting that individuals and companies would receive adequate support to reduce poultry imports drastically.
Mr. Eric Opoku was impressed with A2 Agro Allied’s standard equipment, commenting that the company is poised to bring positive change to the poultry industry and contribute to Ghana’s economy.
The Minister pledged the government’s desire to support the company and others to reduce poultry imports and create decent jobs for the unemployed.
The bankroller of A2 Agro Allied, Mr. Adolf Adarkwah, expressed gratitude for the Minister’s visit and the government’s desire to support the company.
A2 Agro Allied currently employs 200 workers and has a production capacity of 80 tons of poultry feed in 8 hours, with the potential to produce 160 tons in 24 hours using a shift system.
The company aims to produce high-quality poultry feed at a cheaper cost, exceeding demand in Ghana.
Mr. Adolf Adarkwah expressed readiness to support the government’s “Nkoko Nketekete” programme to increase local bird consumption and create employment opportunities.
The Agric Minister was accompanied by Mayor of Kumasi, Mr Richard Ofori-Agyeman, some staff of the Ministry and regional officers of Agric.
