ADUM FIRE UPDATE: KMA to conduct structural tests before traders can reoccupy shops

Less than 1 minute Minutes

The Works Department of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has proposed conducting a structural integrity test on all buildings affected by the Adum fire.

Traders in the Blue Light Building, Akwasi Agyemang Building, and the adjacent Hello FM Building are still counting their losses from last Friday’s fire.

Although they are eager to resume business, Ing. Eric Yaw Owusu, Head of Works at KMA, and his team of experts have advised against reoccupying the buildings until the tests are completed.

Conducting these tests is crucial to ensure the buildings’ structural integrity, and Ing Owusu warned traders not to return to their shops until authorized to do so.

He stated that allowing traders to occupy the burnt buildings without conducting the necessary tests could be catastrophic.

On Monday, March 24, the Works Department, Estate Unit, Environmental Health Unit, and NADMO visited Adum to assess the prevailing conditions and interact with victims.

They moved around the disaster area observing and taking notes for future decisions.

The KMA and stakeholders are working tirelessly to support traders in resuming their businesses.

Meanwhile, adequate security measures have been put in place, with personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), police, NADMO, and military deployed to manage the disaster area.
